Senior Leaders Still Need Development And Here Is How To Tell Them!

Leaders making their way into senior leadership in the financial sector do so because of their unique strengths; expertise, experience, drive and resilience. But in today’s uncertainty and complexity, these strengths are not all particularly useful for navigating unknown contexts not seen before. Experience and expertise aren’t predictors of future and aren’t so helpful in complex situations, when cause and effect are unclear.
Jonathan Davidson’s (FCA) speech for the 6th Annual Culture and Conduct Forum, highlights many complex issues requiring attention from leaders – delivering social purpose, breaking barriers around diversity and inclusion, and defining the role of financial services in climate change and sustainability.
If the criteria by which many leaders were promoted is ill-equipped for today, how can we deliver the message that they still need developing, and specifically in sense-making skills? It’s not about loading up on more knowledge. It’s about enabling leaders to move beyond mere knowledge to develop their underlying capacity to make sense of what is happening and of themselves. Using the analogy of a mobile phone, it is not adding Apps to the phone, it’s upgrading the operating system, so leaders are able to think, relate and act on a par with the complexity they face.
