Now that the FCA’s plans for the new Consumer Duty have started to sink in, firms are galvanising their project teams and starting their Gap Analyses. However, whilst there is a lot of talk and discussion about the new principle for business, cross cutting rules and new conduct rules, there appears to be very little discussion at this stage about the over-arching role of “employee competence.” The Worksmart team, and guests, want to get the discussion going and hopefully with a bit of lively debate consider the implications of the new Consumer Duty from a wider Training & Competence perspective. With any regulatory initiative the devil is in the detail and whilst we don’t as yet have final policy on the topic, it seems only right that we should consider this angle.
With the FCA focusing in on what firms might consider when assessing the effectiveness of the programme within their organisations, it was interesting to see the types of data/information that the FCA was suggesting firms could use. Would your organisation be confident to hand over their Training & Competence records to the regulator? If asked, could your firm demonstrate the gap analysis and subsequent development plans for each new starter you’ve on-boarded in the last few years? Would being asked to demonstrate “role relevant” training on conduct rules to staff make you start to feel a little uncomfortable?
Regardless of whether you might answer Yes/No/Don’t know to any one of those questions, we think your input and perspective would add value to our debate on the topic.
We know from feedback after our past events and broadcasts that firms and individuals gain value and comfort from evaluating their firm’s thinking through group discussion and debate with peers. So, join the Worksmart team, and our guests for this event – Jeff Abbot (T&C News) and Lynne Hargreaves (Clearstep Consulting) for an interesting discussion and focus on the wider competence debate.
